IBM
IBM has been a world-class diversity leader for more than a decade. The company’s strong moral values, which it adheres to everywhere around the world, have made it a leader in LGBT rights as well as a strong advocate for the rights of other under-
represented groups. Yet it still manages to tailor its diversity efforts to
the local needs across the globe.
With 77 percent of its employees outside of the United States, IBM has
pioneered effective use of resource groups and mentoring globally. The
company’s mentoring program involves a variety of mentoring initiatives
and includes the top three layers of the organization. The mentoring
relationships and successes are evaluated annually, and IBM strongly
encourages its executives to participate and value mentoring, especially
cross-cultural mentoring.
All employees in the United States can join its resource groups, which
are used for talent and leadership development, as well as community
outreach. All groups are encouraged to hold informational/cultural
events about their community, including forums, blogs, face-to-face
meetings and virtual meetings.
IBM also has strong supplier diversity in the United States, with more
than 10 percent of its Tier I (direct contractor) procurement going to
minority-owned suppliers.
IBM received DiversityInc’s Top Company for Global Cultural
Competence special award in 2011.

CUMMINS
LEADERSHIP
Solid performance has Cummins returning to the list for the sixth consecutive year. Cummins is not only a trendsetter in diversity management for its industry, it has held its ground in the top half of the DiversityInc Top 50 against increased par-
ticipation and competition.
The company’s former Chairman and CEO Tim Solso led the charge
last year, meeting with resource groups monthly and linking executive
compensation to diversity metrics, and the same is expected from new
Chairman and CEO Tom Linebarger. The CEO also chairs the diversity
council, which meets quarterly and is accountable for the company’s
diversity goals and metrics. The council also has rotational spots for
resource-group members and presents findings and recommendations to
the board of directors.
The mentoring program is available to the entire organization and
involves the top three levels of management. Cummins utilizes its
resource groups for recruiting and on-boarding, as well as various talent-development initiatives such as mentoring. The groups also assist in
the development of advanced training courses. Two notable examples
include: Safe Leader Training developed by the LGBT Affinity Group and
the Transgender Guidelines Training for transitioning employees, as well
as Chinese Language and Culture training by the Chinese Affinity Group.
