Bill Marriott continues to be a remarkable leader, most recently
disagreeing with his Mormon church by opposing Proposition 8,
which banned same-sex marriages in California. He spoke of his
commitment to be inclusive of everyone at DiversityInc’s November
2009 event on leadership.
The company’s very diverse demographics in its workforce and,
increasingly, its management reflect its efforts to mirror its marketplace. Marriott has long-lasting and effective employee-resource
groups and excellent mandatory diversity training, which emphasizes
cultural competence for customer-facing workers. The company also has generational-communica-tions training.
Marriott has a long history of community building through its operations in urban areas, where
both suppliers and franchisees are often from the community. More than 14 percent of its Tier I (direct
contractor) suppliers are women- or minority-owned businesses.
An astounding 44 percent of its philanthropy is directed at multicultural charities, including
INROADS, the National Urban League, Minority Corporate Counsel Association, National Council of
La Raza, and Parents, Families, & Friends of Lesbians and Gays.
