Mark Aetna’s Mark Bertolini knows firsthand the problems plaguing the healthcare system, having survived a spinal-cord injury and donated a kidney to save his son from an “incurable” disease. Such insight has given Bertolini a profound understanding of the inter- relation between society, the economy and personal responsibility for health. “The relationship with every- thing around us has an impact on us, and our respon- sibility to all of them is incredibly important,” says the president of Aetna (No. 30 on The DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity® list).
