Launched in 2008 in four New Jersey cities, the Rutgers
Future Scholars Program has accepted 400 economically
disadvantaged, academically talented middle schoolers who may
become the first in their families to earn a four-year college
degree. The students receive ongoing academic support,
enrichment, guidance, and mentoring. Each year, 200 new
students will join their ranks. Those who complete the program
successfully and are admitted to Rutgers will be guaranteed free
tuition and fees.
Rutgers has a long-standing commitment to accessibility
and diversity; a large proportion of our undergraduates are
first-generation college students. Too often, however, offering a
college opportunity to high school seniors is already too late.
That’s why Rutgers Future Scholars is based on the concept that
providing a supportive, enriching environment to younger
students is crucial to their success.
Appropriate to Rutgers’ status as a premier public research
university, Rutgers Future Scholars has a significant research
component, including self-assessment and the collection of
national data, with the intention of developing a prototype
program with national implications.
Costs for the Rutgers Future Scholars Program are covered
primarily through private donations and corporate gifts. Once the
students enter college, part of their education may also be funded
by existing federal and state financial aid programs.
