Calendar
Juneteenth
On June 19, the United States
commemorates the end of
slavery. The holiday originated
in 1865 when the Union soldiers landed at Galveston,
Texas, with news that the war
had ended and that slaves
were free—two and a half
years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation
had become official on Jan. 1, 1863.
Gay and Lesbian
Pride Month
June became Gay and Lesbian
Pride Month in 1999. Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender
(GLBT) observances are held in
cities throughout the country to
mark the occasion. June was
chosen in honor of the Stonewall
Riots, the first time the gay community united to fight for its
civil rights, which took place from June 27 to June 29, 1969.
Flag Day
Held on June 14, the day
commemorates the adoption
of the flag of the “new nation,”
the United States, which hap-
pened by resolution of the
Second Continental Congress
in 1777. On Aug. 3, 1949,
President Harry S. Truman offi-
cially declared Flag Day as June 14.
