speaker at The Skanner Foundation’s
21st annual Martin Luther King Jr.
Breakfast on Jan. 15. The breakfast is
the largest event in the Pacific
Northwest to honor the memory and
vision of Dr. King. More than 1,200
people attended. During the breakfast,
The Skanner Foundation awarded
thousands of dollars in scholarships to
worthy students and presented two
awards, the Drum Major of Justice

New York City
The Asian Women in Business
Association held Speak Up and Speak
Out: Mastering the Art of Public
Speaking and Presentations workshop
on Feb. 22 at the Nationwide Finance
Network. The workshop was taught
by Tessie Tiaba, director of Training,
Worldwide Accident & Health
Division for American International
Group. The event included such topics as identifying and maximizing
women’s speaking strengths, developing a speaking strategy that works for
women, and the do’s and don’ts of public speaking.
New York City
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) hosted fundraising events in
February in Phoenix, New York City, Philadelphia and Charlotte.
Founded in 1980, HRC lobbies Congress and works to educate the
public on a wide array of topics affecting GLBT Americans, including
relationship recognition and workplace, family and health issues.
Beverly Hills
Hispanics in Philanthropy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to
promoting philanthropy in the Latino community, honored key individuals, corporations and foundations Feb. 3–5 for outstanding service and charitable contributions to the Latino community and Latino
nonprofit organizations. Honorees included Giselle Fernandez, philanthropist and journalist; Tony Plana, actor and artistic director for
the East LA Class Theatre; and Antonia Hernandez, president,
California Community Foundation.
