Women’s History
Month
The public celebration of
women’s history in this
country began in 1978 as
Women’s History Week in
Sonoma County, Calif. In
1981, a Congressional resolution proclaimed national
Women’s History Week. In 1987, Congress expanded the celebration to a month, and March was declared Women’s
History Month. The National Women’s History Project has lobbied to recognize female trailblazers in fields that span education, politics, science and entertainment.
Purim
One of the most joyous holidays on the Jewish calendar,
Purim commemorates a time
when Jewish people living in
Persia were saved from
extermination. The word
“Purim” means “lots” and
refers to the lottery used to
choose the date for the massacre.
St. Patrick’s Day
St. Patrick’s Day is the feast
day that annually celebrates
St. Patrick, the patron saint of
Ireland. The day is celebrated
worldwide by those of Irish—
and increasingly of non-Irish—descent.
