Thurgood Marshall
Thurgood Marshall was born on
July 2, 1908. The grandson of a
slave, Marshall was the first black
person to serve as a justice in the
U.S. Supreme Court. He served on
the court for 24 years until his
retirement in 1991.
Independence Day
The United States celebrates its
230th anniversary of independence. On July 4, 1776, the final
draft of the Declaration of
Independence was approved. The
document has become the most
important symbol of liberty in the
United States and the date has become the biggest secular
celebration in the United States.
ADA Signed
The Americans with Disabilities Act
was signed on July 26, 1990.
President George H. W. Bush signed
the act into law as a result of rampant discriminatory practices
against people with disabilities in
the workplace.
